Sleep tips for hot weather

So it's nearly 2am...

I don't like to complain about the heat because I would always prefer hot weather over cold but sheesh, how's a gal supposed to get to sleep in this weather?!

My neurospicy brain is on sensory overdrive. I like the cool breeze my fan and air con produce but why are they so noisy! I want complete blackout, but my eyes get too sweaty when I put my eye mask on - like what even is sweaty eyelids?! FML!! And why oh why can't someone invent a lightweight-weighted blanket; I want weight without the heat.

And so alas awakedness, if that's even a word (I googled it and it is a word *insert smug grin at my literacy competency at this hour!).

So despite the usual sleep hygiene I follow each night, and despite yawning whilst writing this I can't sleep...

So some top tips for trying to sleep in this weather.

  1. Remind yourself that when you are tired enough you will sleep. I've learnt that irrespective of the sensory overwhelm, at some point the body (and mind) will crash and glorious sleep will grace me!

  2. Don't just lie in bed getting annoyed that you can't sleep. Get up and do something, anything, and then try sleep again later. Might as well be productive in this time.

  3. Stay hydrated and fed. In this weather it's easy to not eat and drink enough and hunger and dehydration can have contributing factors to poor sleep. Keep a bottle nearby and a spare in the fridge so you've always got a cool drink in rotation. Snack little and often to ensure appropriate nutrient levels are maintained to promote effective sleep.

  4. Give yourself a guilt free lie in to support replenishing some lost sleep. If you know the weather is going to be warm for a few days, can you reschedule commitments and reduce those demands?

Most of all be flexible with yourself as I'm trying to be. It's not ideal that I'm still awake but I'm getting some stuff done which hopefully may tire me out!
